Research on subtractive versus additive problem-solving suggests that when people try to improve something, they don't naturally weigh the full space of possible changes. Across eight experiments and eight observational studies, one pattern held consistently: people default to adding. Given a wobbly Lego structure fixable for free by removing one piece, most participants paid to add unnecessary supports instead. Asked to improve a golf hole, most generated ideas to add and rarely considered taking anything away. Given a puzzle objectively faster to solve by subtracting, roughly half missed the shortcut entirely. This wasn't people weighing options and choosing addition. Follow-up studies showed that most who did think of the subtractive option recognized it as better. The bias sits earlier, at the idea-generation stage: subtractive possibilities often never come to mind at all. This suggests defaulting to addition is a heuristic, not a preference. When researchers simply reminded participants they could "add or subtract," subtractive ideas roughly doubled, with no drop in additive ones. The cue didn't change what people valued. It changed what occurred to them. Conditions matter too: repeated exposure to a problem and lower cognitive load both increased the odds people would find a subtractive path, while mental overload pushed them back to the additive default. Improvement, in other words, isn't evidence that someone is weighing all their options. It may be evidence they've only been shown half the map. The important distinction is between improving and merely accumulating. Improving asks what the work actually needs. Accumulating adds because addition is the first thing that comes to mind. One question is useful: before you add something, have you asked what you could remove instead?
