By the third week of execution, momentum has dissipated and discipline has started to bend. What carried you here cannot carry you further. What sustains execution past this point is not a feeling but a settled decision—one made before the work began—that the work will happen regardless of how it feels on any given day. This is not motivation or discipline. This is a prior agreement that doesn't reopen.

The mechanism: pre-commitment to identity-based rules ("I am someone who writes daily") outperforms motivation-based decisions ("Do I feel like writing today?"). Application

Make the agreement before you need it:

The Agreement: "I will do this work on days when it feels meaningful and days when it does not. I will not use absence of visible progress as permission to stop. I will treat showing up as the baseline, not the achievement."

When to make it: Before the first day. As a condition of beginning. Not in the middle of week 3 when motivation is low.

How it differs from stubbornness: The agreement includes evaluation—but on a schedule (monthly, quarterly), not on a feeling (every morning). Assess direction at planned intervals, not when tired.

What it looks like: Unremarkable. A person who sits down at the same time, does the same work, finishes without particular accomplishment or inspiration. Tuesday identical to Monday identical to Wednesday. From outside: nothing happening. From inside: keeping a promise no one enforces.
