You have named the dragon, walked into the room, and held your ground. Now you have information you did not have before. The question is what you do with it. This week explores why updating your plan is not the same as changing your goal.

Big Idea

Confrontation produces information: about the real difficulty, about your capacity, about what the goal requires that you did not anticipate. The person who has faced an obstacle honestly knows something they did not know before. There are two failures possible now, and they are opposites. The first is refusing to adjust: treating the original plan as sacred even though reality has revealed parts are wrong. The second is abandoning the destination because the obstacle was harder than expected. Both failures share a root cause: the inability to distinguish between destination and route.

Research on learning from failure and goal persistence shows that people who adjust their strategies after setbacks while maintaining their core goals achieve higher success rates than those who either refuse adjustment or abandon goals. The mechanism: a goal is a fixed point. A strategy is a hypothesis. Confrontation tests the hypothesis. Those who learn to separate the two show dramatically higher persistence and ultimate success.

Howard Schultz, 1983. Marketing director at Seattle coffee company. Buying trip to Milan revealed an espresso bar that was not just selling coffee but serving as gathering place, neighborhood anchor, daily ritual. He saw the future of his industry. Returned to Seattle, pitched Starbucks founders to transform stores into espresso bars. Rejected. Left company, pitched 240+ investors (200+ said no), raised money, opened Il Giornale April 1986. Reproduced Milan vision faithfully: 700 sq ft, no chairs, opera on loop, bow ties, paninis prepared off-site. Did not work. Customers told him directly. They wanted to sit, didn't want opera, bow ties felt pretentious. Destination (coffeehouse as community gathering place around quality espresso) was sound. Route (precise Italian replica) was wrong. Schultz adjusted: chairs, softer music, relaxed dress code, expanded menu. Did not change: espresso quality, craft emphasis, third place concept. Within year: 3 locations. 1987: bought original Starbucks for $3.8M. Within 5 years: 150 locations. 1992: went public. Today: 28,000+ stores. Goal did not change. Route did.

Distinguish your destination from your route:

Your destination: What is the actual goal? Not how you planned to reach it. The thing itself. The coffeehouse as gathering place. The product that solves this problem. The movement you want to build.

Your route: How you planned to reach it. The specific approach, timeline, format, strategy. The hypothesis based on what you knew then.

What confrontation revealed: What specific information did the obstacle produce? What part of your route was based on incomplete information? What do you now know about your capacity, the market, the goal itself?

Honest revision: Concrete changes only. Not "try harder." If timeline was wrong, fix the timeline. If approach doesn't work, use different approach. If format doesn't translate, redesign the format.

What stays: The destination. The core of what you are building. Schultz kept espresso quality and third place concept. Everything else could change.
