Most people quit not because the goal stopped mattering, but because they stopped checking. They stopped asking whether the pursuit still deserves its cost. The clarity that sustains long pursuits is not the original vision—it is the updated understanding of what the work has revealed and what it still requires, held together by the discipline of scheduled reassessment.

Wilson and Gilbert found that people show an "impact bias," overestimating how intensely and how long they'll feel a certain way about an event, especially when judging it from within an emotionally charged state. This matters for reassessing long-term goals. Asking "does this still deserve what it costs me?" during fatigue or setback risks a distorted answer, since people don't anticipate their own resilience or capacity to make sense of setbacks. They may abandon a pursuit during a low point that they would have continued had the same question been asked on an ordinary day.

The defensible takeaway is that timing matters: reassessing commitment is more reliable on a stable emotional baseline than reactively during a crisis. Persistence is less about willpower and more about protecting the reassessment process from the distorting pull of transient mood.

Look at a pursuit you have held for at least two years. A project, a career commitment, a relationship, a creative work.

The pattern to notice:

• When was the last time you explicitly asked "does this still deserve what it costs me?"

• What was that moment like? Were you tired, frustrated, at a low point? Or were you on an ordinary day with enough clarity to think?

• What would your answer be if you asked on an ordinary day this week?

A test to run:

Schedule a reassessment—not in response to a crisis or a low moment, but on a specific date when you can think clearly. A quarterly review, or a monthly one. Ask the question: does this pursuit still deserve what it costs me? Allow the answer to be honest. It may be yes. It may be a different yes than before. It may be no. The point is not to arrive at a predetermined answer. The point is to keep the question active, to prevent it from disappearing under the weight of routine.

Reflection

The person who abandons a pursuit after years of work often tells the story as a failure of will. But the research suggests something different: a failure of attention. They did not quit because they became weak. They quit because they stopped asking whether the work still mattered, and when the moment of crisis arrived, they had no current answer to draw on.

Clarity is not something you achieve once and then possess forever. Clarity is something you renew through regular, scheduled attention. And persistence is the practice of paying that attention even when everything in you wants to stop paying attention.
