The most exhausting part of faithfulness is that it demands conscious choice repeatedly, not just once at the beginning. Passion is finite; it runs out on a predictable schedule. What remains after passion depletes is either conviction—the continued choice that something still matters—or inertia, which looks identical from the outside but requires nothing from you except the inability to decide. The person who holds firm for forty years without audience approval has not proven more strength than the person who holds firm for forty months. They've proven something different: that their commitment was never to the feeling of progress or the validation of others. It was to the work itself, and to the periodic, deliberate choice to stay. This is why conviction over decades is rarer than conviction under pressure. Pressure energizes. Time erodes. The commitment that survives time has already been tested by every internal failure of enthusiasm, every external silence, every moment when quitting would have been easier and no one would have blamed you.
