What they can't do is remove something valuable—something that works, something they're good at, something that provides security or identity—because it's occupying space something else needs more. That removal feels like betrayal, like failure, like grief. It is grief. It's also the only way focus actually works.

Research Nugget

Research on courage and risk-seeking in important decisions suggests people don't avoid risk when it matters most. They often seek it out.

Across seven experiments, Gal and Rucker found that important decisions, career moves, medical choices, and high-stakes sports calls pull people toward the risky option in a way trivial decisions don't. Having agency over the choice mattered enormously: people chose the risky path more often than they merely preferred it when the outcome was assigned to them. The same effect barely appeared in low-importance decisions, even ones involving large sums of money.

The explanation traces to what courage requires: fear, purpose, agency, and a reasonable risk-reward balance. Important decisions carry all four; a monetary gamble usually doesn't. Raising the value people placed on courage, through something as simple as a short writing task, shifted them toward risk, but only when the decision was significant.

The mechanism runs through self-perception. Choosing the risky option in an important decision earned more anticipated respect than choosing it trivially, and that anticipated respect predicted the choice itself, but only when people were actually choosing.

The takeaway: in the decisions that define a career or a season, people lean into difficulty, not despite it, but because it's what makes the choice mean something.

Application

Look at something valuable in your life right now—a habit you're good at, a job you're respected in, a commitment that works, an identity you've built. Ask yourself: Am I keeping this because it's actually serving what I want to build? Or am I keeping it because removing it would feel like loss?

If it's the second answer, that's the signal. That's the thing that needs to come off so something else can arrive.

The courage isn't in making the removal. It's in acknowledging that what you're removing was real and valuable, and choosing the loss anyway because something else matters more.

Reflection

There's a specific discomfort that comes with leaving something you're good at. You lose the mastery. You lose the identity. You lose the proof that you can do the thing well. And for a while, you have nothing to replace that with except the unproven belief that you'll be good at this other thing.

That's uncomfortable. That's also the only way to know if the other thing is actually worth pursuing. The proof only arrives after you move. Until then, you're working from faith that your specific talent is needed somewhere else, and that faith can only be tested by the leap itself.
