No heroic figures. The jury called it a masterpiece. Veterans groups called it anti-patriotic. Tom Carhart, Congressman Henry Hyde, and Patrick Buchanan led campaigns to replace it. The attacks extended to Lin herself: age (too young), credentials (student), heritage (Asian-American). Facing enormous pressure, Lin identified what would not change: black granite, chronological order, reflective surface, orientation into earth. What was negotiable: surrounding space. After months of confrontation, a compromise was reached: bronze sculpture and American flag installed nearby. Lin objected but accepted because the wall remained intact. The memorial was dedicated November 1982. Opposition disappeared immediately. Visitors wept at the wall. The site became one of the most visited in Washington.
