Every meaningful pursuit encounters resistance. The problem is not that the dragon exists. The problem is that most obstacles are described in language too vague to challenge. This week explores why clarity begins with precise identification, not vague explanation.

There is a difference between saying "the timing is wrong" and saying "I am afraid that if I attempt this publicly and fail, people I respect will see me differently." One preserves distance. The other reveals the point of resistance. Vague language protects the status quo by justifying inaction without exposing its source. Precise language exposes it by making the actual obstacle visible. Confrontation begins not with courage but with identification. The obstacle must be named clearly before it can be examined.

Research Nugget

Research on expressive writing suggests that people benefit from putting important experiences into words. Even very brief writing about traumatic or meaningful events has been associated with improved health outcomes. One possible explanation is that translating an experience into language makes it more available for reflection and examination rather than leaving it unarticulated.

Brené Brown spent years studying vulnerability, shame, and belonging through thousands of interviews. She could identify the pattern (those with strongest belonging were willing to be seen imperfectly), teach it, and publish it. What she could not initially do was apply it to herself. Her work was built on observation and intellectual distance. She understood vulnerability conceptually, not experientially. The gap between what she studied and how she lived eventually became impossible to ignore. What followed was the realization that the issue was not lack of knowledge but avoidance of something specific: the fear that if she stepped outside expertise and control, she would discover she was not enough. That fear had been present all along. It simply had not been named. Years later, she stood before an audience and described that experience publicly, not as expert explaining from safety but as someone whose research had become personal. The impact came not from new information but from the willingness to identify openly what had previously remained concealed.

Application

Identify your dragon precisely:

From vague to specific:

Vague: "The timing is wrong." Specific: "I am afraid that if I attempt this publicly and fail, people I respect will see me differently."

Both internal and external:

Internal obstacles: fear of failure, perfectionism, self-sabotage, limiting stories

External obstacles: unresponsive market, constraining relationships, systems that reward status quo

Most people carry both. Each strengthens the other.

The test:

Can you name your obstacle with enough precision that it can no longer hide behind a broader story? If you're still using vague language, you're still protecting it.
