When the work becomes automatic, the assumptions underlying it become invisible. And invisible assumptions are the ones most likely to shift. Goals do not announce when they have drifted. The original purpose remains stated, but daily actions have gradually reorganized around something adjacent—something easier to measure, reward, or sustain. The person or team keeps executing, but the destination has quietly shifted without anyone consciously deciding to change it. Action without periodic reflection is not discipline. The system was too consistent to pause and ask if what they were measuring was still connected to what they set out to build.

The Three Questions: Ask these at planned intervals (monthly, quarterly), not reactively:

1. Is what I'm building still what I set out to build? The drift is rarely toward something obviously wrong—it's toward something adjacent that's easier to measure, reward, or sustain.

2. Have my metrics become a substitute for the purpose they were meant to serve? Metrics are tools to indicate progress. When execution becomes consistent, metrics can quietly become the goal itself.

3. If I were starting today with everything I know now, would I build this the same way? Not about regret—about honesty. You know more now. Conditions have changed. Would you choose this path if choosing today?

Reflection vs. Doubt: Reflection is not doubt. Doubt asks if work is worth doing. Reflection asks if work is still doing what you intended. The fear of doubt prevents most people from pausing. Scheduled reflection keeps momentum pointed at the right destination.
