Big Idea

A vision without markers is a feeling, not a direction. Structure exists to bridge the gap between seeing clearly and knowing what to do next. When results are distant, markers keep the work legible. They answer the question that urgency cannot: am I moving, or am I standing still? A marker is a position along the way—specific enough to be reached or missed, close enough to be acted on, concrete enough to be evaluated without ambiguity.

Research on implementation intentions and goal attainment shows that specifying when, where, and how a goal will be pursued increases follow-through rates by 2-3x compared to commitment alone. The mechanism: concrete markers create "instant habits" by linking situational cues to specific actions, bypassing the need for continuous motivation. Progress becomes measurable, not just felt.

Run the June test on your vision:

The Question: What will be different six months from now? Not what you hope—what measurable positions will you occupy that you don't occupy today?

If vague: The vision hasn't become operational yet. The calendar hasn't been enlisted. The days between now and then haven't been organized.

Structure requires:

• Markers close enough to act on (this week/month, not "someday")

• Positions specific enough to reach or miss (not "be healthier" but "15 pounds lighter")

• Evidence that can be evaluated ("did I do what I said?" not "do I feel successful?")
